My early works were inspired by the abstract expressionism of Mark Rothko’s color fields. My forte and interest is the interplay of color in space. I eventually distilled my work of textural color fields down to stripes.
My formal art training was in fine art—watercolor, to be specific. I studied fiber design with a master of weaving and worked as an apprentice in a professional weaving studio. I opened my own weaving studio in northern California, where I began executing large-scale site-specified fiber sculptures and eventually ranked in the country’s top 2% of commission fiber artists.
Executing large-scale commissions involves collaboration and mutual respect between architects, project managers, construction supervisors, art committees, and the general public.
The fiber sculptures were woven on a Cranbrook 6′ countermarch loom using a 10/5 linen warp and Swedish woolen yarns. Sheet acrylic is drilled and heat-formed; I then thread the warp into the formed acrylic, which shapes the pieces. The sculptures are hung from the ceiling and spotlit to project shadows of the warp and form.
